Francisco Icaza

Biografía

Throughout his life, Francisco Icaza exhibited individually and collectively in museums in America, Asia, Europe and the Middle East. He studied painting and sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, Belgium. In 1949, Rufino Tamayo invited him to study and work at his "atelier" in New York. He was also a student of Antonio Rodríguez Luna, in Mexico City. In 1957 he was one of the founders and an active exponent in the "Frente Nacional de Artes Plásticas". In 1961, along with Arnold Belkin, created the group "Nueva Presencia" or "The Interiorists". He was an active participant in the "Confrontación 66" pictoric movement. In 1968 he founded along with Manuel Felguérez, Vicente Rojo and others the "Salón Independiente". Right after the tragic events of 1968 throughout the world, he decided to work as a medieval painter, without galleries, constantly traveling throughout Europe and America; these circumstances obliged him to base his creations exclusively on drawing. From 1990 to 2014 Francisco Icaza established back in Mexico City to devote himself, entirely to oil painting.
