Miguel Castro Leñero (Mexico City, 1956 – ) is a renowned Mexican painter and a leading figure in contemporary Mexican art. He studied at the Escuela Nacional de Pintura y Escultura “La Esmeralda” and later attended the Centro de Investigación y Experimentación Plástica, both under the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes (INBA). Though his formal education was brief, he developed a distinctive artistic voice that blends abstraction with elements of daily life. Throughout his career, Castro Leñero has exhibited his work extensively in Mexico, the United States, and Europe, including New York, Austria, Germany, and Brazil. His paintings are part of private collections across multiple countries, and he has participated in numerous collective exhibitions. In 1981, he was awarded the Acquisition Prize at the Salón Nacional de Artes Plásticas, Biennial Graphics Section, recognizing his innovative approach to contemporary painting. His artistic style is characterized by textured surfaces and simplified forms, drawing inspiration from his imagination and everyday surroundings. His work frequently features recurring motifs such as animals, clouds, houses, and rivers, which he reduces to their most essential elements. Through his unique visual language, Castro Leñero creates a deeply personal interpretation of the world, making him a significant figure in modern Mexican art.
