Bringing together works produced in the second half of the twentieth century, the exhibition highlights the technical, cultural, and collaborative dimensions that define this unique form of image-making. Gobelin tapestries are created through a meticulous weaving process in which images are constructed thread by thread on vertical looms. Using wool and cotton, artisans translate pictorial compositions into richly textured surfaces, where color, form, and material become inseparable. Unlike painting, where the image is applied to a surface, the gobelin builds the image within its very structure. In Mexico, this practice gained prominence with the founding of the Taller Mexicano de Gobelinos in Guadalajara in 1968 by Austrian master weaver Fritz Riedl. The workshop became a key site for the introduction and development of gobelin techniques in the country, fostering collaboration between artists and highly skilled weavers. Through this process, artistic designs were transformed into complex textile works that retain both visual precision and material depth. Simultaneously, important textile initiatives such as those developed in Xonacatlán during the 1970s expanded the reach of gobelin production. Local artisans, trained through collaborations with international specialists, adapted the technique to their own cultural context, resulting in works that combine technical mastery with regional identity. A defining feature of these tapestries is the collaborative relationship between artist and artisan. Many of the works are based on designs by recognized artists, interpreted through the technical expertise of weavers. This shared authorship challenges traditional distinctions between art and craft, positioning the gobelin as a space of collective creation. Through this exhibition, G2 Gallery highlights the richness of gobelin tapestry in Mexico, emphasizing its capacity to merge tradition and innovation. The works on view reveal how textile can function as a powerful medium for image-making, where texture, structure, and color create a dynamic and immersive visual experience.
